Kontron has launched CERES-TSN, a compact rugged managed Ethernet switch for deterministic, secure, and high-bandwidth networking in defence environments.

The switch is aimed at embedded tactical networks in ground defence systems, naval applications, tactical communications, C4I and C4ISR systems, data acquisition platforms, high-resolution camera networks, sensor fusion systems, rapid threat detection, and optional avionics use. Its architecture combines Time-Sensitive Networking with high-bandwidth optical connectivity and a rugged mechanical design for harsh operating conditions.

CERES-TSN offers up to 28 fully managed Layer 2/3 ports, including up to 24 1GbE ports and four 10GbE optical interfaces via rugged 38999-type connectors. The platform uses Microchip’s LAN9696TSN switch fabric and delivers line-rate forwarding performance of up to 66Gbps, supporting dense internal data movement across distributed platform electronics.

Timing support includes IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol and IEEE 802.1AS, allowing low-latency deterministic communication across mission systems. The switch also supports IPv4 and IPv6 routing, multicast, quality of service, VLANs, redundancy, SNMP, command-line interface management, and web-based configuration.

Security features include HTTPS, SSH, IEEE 802.1X network access control, and optional secure boot. In defence networks where sensors, compute nodes, communications equipment, and weapon-adjacent electronics are increasingly linked through Ethernet, secure management and deterministic traffic handling are becoming part of the platform architecture rather than cabinet-level accessories.

The hardware is fanless and conduction-cooled, with an IP65-rated enclosure and operation from -40°C to +55°C, with +71°C available on request. The conduction-cooled version meets MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-461F requirements, supporting deployment where vibration, shock, electromagnetic compatibility, and thermal behaviour must be qualified before system integration.

European design and production are central to the system’s supply profile. CERES-TSN is ITAR- and BAFA-free, produced as a controlled platform by a single manufacturer, and backed by a guaranteed lifecycle of at least 10 years, with warranty extensions of up to five years. Those details carry weight in defence electronics, where replacement availability, export constraints, and configuration stability can shape procurement as much as headline performance.

Defence platforms are absorbing more cameras, radars, electronic warfare systems, communications links, autonomy functions, and edge processors. As those subsystems become more data-intensive, the internal network has to carry time-critical and conventional traffic without turning every upgrade into a custom integration exercise. TSN helps address that problem by adding deterministic behaviour to Ethernet-based architectures.

European defence electronics is also being pulled closer to mainstream industrial production. CSG’s European electronic fuze contracts showed how electronic subsystems are moving through defence supply chains at scale, while Hannover Messe’s defence manufacturing presence reflected the same convergence between automation, secure digital infrastructure, and military production.

The 28-port version of CERES-TSN is available now, with a further variant planned later this year. As platform electronics become more distributed, rugged Ethernet switches with deterministic timing and controlled supply chains are becoming critical components in the architecture, not passive networking hardware added after the system has already been defined.
