Midlands manufacturers join forces for industry opportunities

VORS targets multi-billion-pound opportunity in high-stakes sectors. Midlands-based specialists PP Control & Automation, ByteSnap Design, and Kasdon have launched VORS to accelerate time-to-market and ensure compliance in defence, medical, and life sciences industries. The collaboration promises streamlined project management and robust supply chain resilience.

Three Midlands manufacturing and design specialists have united under the banner of Versatile Outsourcing in Resilient Systems (VORS) to tackle a multi-billion-pound opportunity across the medical, life sciences, defence, and security sectors.

The consortium, comprising PP Control & Automation (PP C&A), ByteSnap Design, and Kasdon, aims to provide a comprehensive design, development, manufacturing, and assembly service, enabling the Ministry of Defence (MoD), primes, and major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to expedite time-to-market while mitigating risks and ensuring compliance.

With a combined workforce exceeding 280 employees and annual revenues surpassing £45 million, VORS is positioned to streamline project management, offering a single accountable partner throughout the product lifecycle, from prototyping to full-scale production. Richard Spears of PP C&A, a key proponent of the initiative, highlighted that the collaboration was spurred by recent government announcements on defence spending and investment. “We recognised that this sector demands a specific capability set and highly regulated product and system development,” Spears noted.

The alliance aims to attract both domestic and international orders where supply chain resilience is paramount. As the initiative gains traction, Spears revealed ongoing discussions with potential clients that could be worth over £5 million collectively. VORS’s investment in automation and quality accreditations, including ISO 13485, positions it to meet the stringent demands and compliance requirements of these regulated and high-stakes markets.

Steve Stockley, Managing Director of Kasdon, underscored the critical nature of resilient systems in these sectors. “Systems are deployed in high-stakes, often harsh environments, demanding long lifecycle performance and robust supply chain security,” Stockley stated.

This sentiment was echoed by Dunstan Power, Director at ByteSnap Design, who emphasised the importance of closer working relationships with SMEs, as highlighted in the MoD’s Defence Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Action Plan and the MedTech Funding Mandate.

The strategic collaboration of these Midlands-based specialists is set to harness significant opportunities, with potential to generate new employment in the region.
