Molex has announced the commercial availability of its Quad-Row Shield Connector, a board-to-board interconnect that combines a four-row signal-pin layout with an integrated metal electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield — a first in the industry. The component, which the company claims is the world’s smallest connector to include built-in EMI protection, is designed for space-constrained devices such as wearables, mobile electronics, and AR/VR platforms.
The launch builds on Molex’s original Quad-Row connector architecture, first introduced in 2020, which achieved a 30 percent reduction in size compared with conventional dual-row designs. The new shielded version targets the 2.4–6 GHz spectrum, where interference from wireless components and adjacent electronics commonly degrades performance. Molex reports that the internal shield achieves up to a 25 dB reduction in EMI compared with non-shielded equivalents.
“Without shielding, connectors can be vulnerable to external electromagnetic noise from nearby components or far-fielded devices, causing signal degradation, data errors, and system malfunctions,” said Taekeon Park, director, Micro Connectors, Molex. “Quad-Row Shield removes those design and performance hurdles by ensuring enhanced reliability and signal integrity, as well as design flexibility and space optimisation.”
By integrating the shield directly into the connector, Molex eliminates the need for bulky external covers or complex grounding arrangements. The design also includes two power-pin sets capable of delivering four times the current of a standard single-pin connector, allowing up to 80 signal connections within one compact housing. According to Molex, this architecture simplifies assembly, reduces bill-of-materials cost, and supports higher throughput across compact consumer platforms.
The company’s engineering teams collaborated with major device and gaming manufacturers to co-develop the new model, addressing industry demand for greater power density and tighter EMI control. Molex said the shielded configuration not only improves data-signal performance but also helps manufacturers meet stringent EMI/EMC compliance standards — reducing the need for additional regulatory testing and shortening design-to-approval cycles.
The Quad-Row Shield Connector is positioned to support next-generation wearables, laptops, and smart appliances, where RF noise and physical miniaturisation increasingly challenge board-level design. With error-free communication and simplified integration cited as key performance advantages, Molex expects the component to enhance uptime and reliability in connected consumer devices.
Samples are available now, with full commercial availability scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.
