Silanna ADCs enter Anglia’s European linecard

Anglia has signed Silanna for pan-European analogue component distribution rights. The agreement adds configurable pin-compatible ADCs, evaluation kits, and a two-year production-order price freeze to Anglia’s European linecard.

Anglia Components has signed a pan-European franchise agreement with Silanna, adding the semiconductor company’s configurable analogue-to-digital converters and laser-driver products to its authorised distribution linecard.

The agreement gives Anglia access to ADCs that Silanna positions as pin-for-pin compatible with established analogue devices from major suppliers. Silanna says the targeted parts can offer comparable or improved performance while reducing component cost by as much as 30%, and the company is also offering a two-year price freeze on qualifying production orders.

Anglia says it has invested in stock and field application engineering support for the range, putting the emphasis on design support rather than catalogue availability alone. Customers can therefore evaluate alternative ADCs with local technical assistance and move from sampling into production without waiting for a separate support channel to be established.

Silanna’s Plural architecture underpins the product strategy. The company says the architecture allows multiple devices to be created from the same chip platform, reducing the amount of new design work required when a device has to be adapted for a different specification or pin-compatible target. That gives the supplier more scope to introduce variants quickly and to respond to shortages or obsolescence without starting every design from a separate silicon base.

Pin compatibility can reduce the mechanical and PCB work involved in changing a converter, but it does not make an ADC substitution automatic. Selection still depends on parameters including resolution, effective number of bits, signal-to-noise performance, input bandwidth, reference behaviour, power consumption, interface timing, temperature range, and the way the device behaves inside the analogue front end around it.

A footprint match is therefore only the first part of qualification. In industrial, instrumentation, communications, and embedded designs, a converter may remain in production for many years, so an alternative device has to be assessed against the actual signal chain rather than the package drawing alone. Field application engineering becomes useful here because the cost of a failed substitution can exceed any unit-price saving very quickly.

The pricing element reflects a second constraint that has become harder to ignore in analogue procurement. Unit cost matters, but predictable pricing, continuity of supply, and the cost of qualifying alternatives all feed into the lifetime economics of a product. Silanna says production orders placed under its programme will hold their price for two years, giving customers a degree of protection against abrupt increases during a manufacturing cycle.

That proposition will be tested against a market in which incumbent analogue suppliers retain deep design support, broad portfolios, and long qualification histories. A challenger device that is cheaper on paper still has to demonstrate electrical equivalence or improvement in the real application, and it must remain available for as long as the customer expects to build the product.

Silanna is also presenting the Plural architecture as a way to improve supply resilience. Reusing a configurable chip platform across several device variants can reduce dependence on separate designs for every product and may give the manufacturer more flexibility when demand changes. The practical value will depend on how closely those variants match the specifications customers already use, particularly in designs where analogue performance leaves little margin for substitution.

Anglia says the ADCs and evaluation kits are available from stock through Anglia Live. Immediate access is important because the most credible test of a pin-compatible alternative is straightforward bench evaluation: engineers can compare the device against an incumbent on an existing board, measure the relevant analogue and digital behaviour, and determine whether the pricing and supply advantages survive qualification.

The franchise gives Silanna a larger European design and inventory channel while giving Anglia another analogue range built around compatibility with established parts. Whether the partnership gains traction will be decided less by headline savings than by repeatable performance, design support, and the ability to keep qualified devices available through long product lifecycles.
