FC Lane Electronics has added Cinch-Fibreco JCON Junior bulkhead expanded-beam adapters to its rugged fibre-optic range, giving system designers a way to connect an M83526-compliant expanded-beam interface to standard commercial fibre patchcords.
The adapter is intended for panel-mounted systems operating in demanding environments, including defence communications, outside broadcast, industrial equipment, mining, marine, and offshore installations. Instead of specifying a custom cable assembly between the rugged connector and the transceiver, designers can use a standard patchcord behind the bulkhead and replace it independently when cable length, routing, or maintenance requirements change.
FC Lane says the JCON Junior uses an M83526-compliant fibre-optic interface on the rugged side and a rear adapter plate for standard commercial connectors. The range is offered with two or four optical channels, in singlemode or multimode versions, with bulkhead-D and square-flange mounting options. Standard configurations use a black anodised aluminium shell, while zinc cobalt and stainless-steel options are available for installations requiring different environmental or mechanical characteristics.
The product is based on Cinch-Fibreco’s expanded-beam technology. In an expanded-beam connector, lenses enlarge and collimate the light passing between fibre ends, so the optical path crosses a larger interface than it would in a conventional physical-contact connection. The approach is widely used in harsh environments because it is less sensitive to small particles and repeated mating contamination, while the exposed interface can be easier to inspect and clean in the field.
That does not remove maintenance requirements, but it changes the conditions the connection is designed to tolerate. Tactical, mining, offshore, or mobile broadcast cables can be connected and disconnected repeatedly in environments where dust, moisture, handling damage, and limited access are routine. Reducing sensitivity at the mating interface can therefore be more useful than minimising connector size when uptime and field serviceability dominate the design brief.
The JCON Junior adapter extends that serviceability to the equipment side of the bulkhead. FC Lane says standard LC, ST, SC, or FC patchcords can be used according to the rear adapter configuration, with its current product listing highlighting LC integration. If an internal patch lead is damaged or a different routing length is required, the cable can be changed without reterminating the rugged external connector or ordering a bespoke assembly.
The modular arrangement can simplify production as well as field repair. Custom fibre assemblies introduce another controlled part number, another cable length to specify, and often another lead time into the bill of materials. A bulkhead adapter that terminates into standard patchcords separates the rugged external interface from the internal fibre run, allowing manufacturers to standardise the panel connection while varying the equipment-side cable between product versions.
FC Lane lists tool-free installation and simple cleaning among the design features, alongside multiple keying options intended to reduce mis-mating. The company also states that the JCON family is designed to deliver optical performance in line with MIL-DTL-83526 requirements, while the product page identifies the interface itself as M83526 compliant.
Expanded-beam connectivity normally carries a cost and size premium over ordinary commercial fibre connectors, so it tends to be selected where the environment justifies the additional hardware. The JCON Junior arrangement confines that specialised interface to the equipment boundary while allowing familiar commercial patchcords behind it, reducing the amount of rugged proprietary cabling in the complete system.
FC Lane is offering the adapters through its existing Cinch-Fibreco franchise, with standard configurations covering two- and four-channel versions. The design gives equipment makers a rugged expanded-beam connection where the outside environment reaches the enclosure while keeping the internal fibre simpler and independently replaceable.
For long-life industrial and defence electronics, that division can remove an awkward custom cable assembly without changing the connector technology already chosen for the harsh part of the installation. The practical test will be whether the adapter can deliver the expected optical performance and field durability while giving maintenance teams the simpler patchcord replacement that the architecture is designed to provide.
