Avalon and Zollner form India electronics venture

Avalon and Zollner are forming an Indian electronics manufacturing venture. The operation will combine PCBA, box-build, integration, testing, sourcing, and lifecycle services for industrial and high-reliability equipment.

Avalon Technologies and Zollner Elektronik have agreed to establish an electronics manufacturing joint venture in India, combining Avalon’s domestic production base with Zollner’s international engineering and electronics manufacturing services operation.

The proposed company is expected to be established with Zollner holding an initial 51% interest and Avalon owning 49%. The agreement also provides a route for Avalon to acquire a further 2% after commercial production begins, subject to the terms governing the venture.

Its planned scope reaches beyond printed circuit board assembly. The partners intend to provide PCBA, box-build, system integration, testing, validation, industrialisation support, sourcing, supply chain coordination, logistics, and associated after-sales services.

That combination places the venture towards the higher-complexity end of the EMS market, where customers increasingly expect a manufacturing partner to manage more of the product lifecycle. Industrial and professional equipment can remain in production for many years, making configuration control, component availability, repair, engineering changes, and test strategy as important as assembly throughput.

Healthcare and life sciences, test and measurement, rail, and other industrial sectors are among the target markets. These applications tend to involve lower volumes and more product variants than mainstream consumer electronics, while imposing tighter requirements around traceability, documentation, validation, and long-term support.

Avalon already operates an integrated manufacturing model in India, with capabilities spanning PCB assembly, cable and wire harnesses, magnetics, plastics, sheet metal, and precision machining. Incorporating those processes into the new company would allow customers to source a greater proportion of the electronics and electromechanical assembly through one manufacturing relationship.

Zollner contributes a wider international customer base and more than six decades of electronics manufacturing experience. Its operations cover engineering, industrialisation, production, supply chain services, and after-sales support, and the company has been expanding its Asian footprint as electronics customers seek additional regional manufacturing options.

The joint structure gives Zollner operational control during the initial phase while allowing Avalon to provide local manufacturing knowledge, suppliers, infrastructure, and supporting processes. For customers, ownership will be less important than whether the partners can transfer production methods and quality systems effectively into the new operation.

That transfer is particularly important for high-mix electronics. A factory may be capable of placing components accurately at volume while still struggling with product introduction, test development, variant management, low-volume procurement, or engineering changes. Those functions determine whether an EMS site can support complex equipment rather than simply assemble boards.

Test development can be a differentiator in its own right. Industrial electronics often require functional test, traceable results, fault diagnosis, and configuration-specific procedures, so transferring a product between sites depends on reproducing the complete validation process rather than simply matching the assembly drawing and bill of materials.

India has attracted substantial investment in electronics manufacturing as businesses diversify supply chains and develop capacity closer to the country’s growing domestic market. Much of the headline investment has involved large-volume electronics, but professional and industrial EMS follows a different pattern, with smaller production runs, deeper engineering involvement, and longer product lifecycles.

The Avalon-Zollner venture is designed around that latter model. Zollner gains a manufacturing platform in India without building an entirely new organisation from the ground up, while Avalon gains access to international programmes, engineering processes, and customer relationships that can broaden the complexity of work handled locally.

The next milestones are incorporation, regulatory and contractual completion, production preparation, and customer qualification. Those steps will determine how quickly the proposal becomes usable manufacturing capacity — particularly for customers that need repeatable test, controlled component sourcing, and lifecycle support rather than additional assembly floor space alone.
