Vishay Intertechnology has expanded its power semiconductor portfolio with 16 FRED Pt ultrafast rectifiers in the DFN6546A package, targeting compact, high-efficiency designs across commercial, industrial, and automotive applications.
The 200V devices support current ratings from 6A to 15A and are available in both commercial-grade and AEC-Q101-qualified automotive versions. The DFN6546A package measures 6.5mm × 4.6mm and has a low profile of 0.88mm, giving designers a smaller package option for power-conversion circuits where board height, current capability, and thermal performance are all design constraints.
Compared with similarly sized components in the SMPC, or TO-277A, package, the rectifiers provide approximately 10% lower height and up to 50% higher current capability. Vishay has used optimised copper mass and die placement to improve thermal performance and support operation at elevated current levels.
The rectifiers are intended for high-frequency and power-conversion functions, including DC/DC converters, inverters, freewheeling diodes, snubber circuits, reverse-polarity protection, and load-dump protection. Automotive applications include engine control units, LED lighting, ADAS hardware, lidar, camera modules, 48V power systems, battery management systems, and onboard charging.
Electrical performance is centred on switching efficiency and loss reduction. The devices provide a forward voltage drop of approximately 0.75V, reduced reverse leakage current, and fast reverse-recovery behaviour. Short reverse-recovery time and low reverse-recovery charge help reduce switching losses, while operation across a −55°C to +175°C temperature range supports use in harsh environments.
The DFN6546A package includes wettable flanks, enabling automatic optical inspection and reducing reliance on X-ray inspection during manufacturing. The components are suitable for automated assembly, meet MSL 1 requirements under J-STD-020, support a maximum reflow temperature of 260°C, and are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.
Power stages are being pushed into smaller spaces across automotive and industrial electronics. Higher electrical density is appearing in 48V architectures, compact converters, distributed power rails, electrified auxiliaries, sensor-heavy control modules, and charging systems. Rectifiers are often treated as routine components, yet their package, thermal path, and recovery behaviour can influence efficiency, electromagnetic performance, and board layout.
Package choice is also becoming more closely tied to manufacturing quality. Leadless packages can save space and improve electrical performance, but inspection of solder joints is a practical concern in high-volume production. Wettable flanks allow solder fillets to be checked using automatic optical inspection, which supports process control without forcing every assembly through X-ray inspection.
Automotive qualification adds another layer of design discipline. Components used in power electronics must withstand thermal cycling, vibration, and long service lives while maintaining predictable behaviour under fault and transient conditions. In applications such as battery management, onboard charging, lidar, and ADAS support hardware, small gains in packaging and switching performance can help reduce the size and heat burden of the surrounding circuit.
With sample and production quantities available, the DFN6546A FRED Pt rectifiers give designers a route to reduce package volume while maintaining current capability. The strongest fit is in compact converter and protection designs where thermal margin, switching loss, automated inspection, and automotive reliability have to be addressed at the same time.
