Same Sky has expanded its electromechanical component range with three families of compact piano DIP switches for electronic circuit board configuration. The DS06-127-SMT, DS07-254, and DS08-254-SMT series offer different contact pitches, actuator arrangements, and mounting methods, with package widths as small as 6mm and heights starting at 4.2mm.
The new components provide multiple independently operated switch positions in a single package. A dual in-line package switch allows an electronic circuit to detect a pattern of mechanically selected contact states, making it suitable for settings that need to remain fixed during equipment operation. Available configurations across the three families range from two to ten positions.
Such switches are commonly connected to digital inputs on an embedded controller. Each individual contact provides an open or closed state that the surrounding circuit can interpret through an appropriate pull-up or pull-down arrangement. The resulting combination can be used to establish an equipment address, select an operating mode, or set another installation parameter without requiring a separate display or software interface.
The DS06-127-SMT family uses a 1.27mm contact pitch with surface-mount gull-wing terminations. Its flush piano actuators sit within a low-profile package measuring 6mm in width and 4.2mm in height. The two-position variant measures 3.68mm in length, with longer bodies used to accommodate additional switch positions.
That combination of reduced pitch and low package height is intended for assemblies where mechanical clearance and available printed circuit board area are restricted. Gull-wing terminals permit the switch to be mounted using surface-mount assembly processes, with its electrical connections soldered to pads on the board rather than inserted through drilled holes.
Surface-mount installation places particular importance on the component footprint, solder joint geometry, and mechanical access to the actuators. An assembler must be able to solder the device without interfering with nearby components, while the finished equipment must allow any required configuration changes to be made without damaging the switch or surrounding circuitry.
The DS07-254 series provides a different arrangement, using a 2.54mm pitch and through-hole PC pin terminations. Its raised piano actuators provide greater physical access, while the pins pass through the circuit board for soldering. The family includes short and long pin variants, allowing the mechanical configuration to be selected according to the assembly requirements.
Through-hole mounting may be appropriate where the existing board layout or manufacturing process already accommodates pin-mounted switches. It also changes the physical connection between the component and circuit board compared with the surface-mount DS06 family. Board thickness, hole dimensions, soldering arrangements, and the available enclosure clearance must therefore be considered when selecting a variant.
The DS08-254-SMT family retains the larger 2.54mm contact pitch but uses surface-mount gull-wing terminals. Its raised piano actuators provide an alternative to the flush DS06 design, while the mounting arrangement supports surface-mount assembly. The published dimensions include a 9mm package width and 6.65mm height for representative DS08 variants.
Selection between these families depends on more than the number of switch positions. A flush actuator can reduce the package profile, while a raised actuator may be easier to access with a suitable tool. Contact pitch influences package length and component spacing, and the mounting method affects how the part is incorporated into the manufacturing process.
Same Sky specifies switching current of 25mA and switching voltage of 24V DC for the three families. The switches are consequently intended for low-current signal and configuration circuits rather than direct control of substantial electrical loads. Their contact ratings must be considered when establishing the electrical circuit used to detect or change each switch state.
The manufacturer separately specifies non-switching current of 100mA and non-switching voltage of 50V DC. These ratings describe conditions associated with contacts that are not being operated under load, whereas switching ratings concern the electrical stresses experienced as a contact changes state. The distinction is important because current interruption and contact movement impose different requirements from carrying current through an established connection.
Mechanical contacts can also produce short periods of repeated opening and closing during actuation, commonly described as contact bounce. Where a controller monitors the switch while it is being moved, its hardware or firmware may need to avoid interpreting those transitions as several separate changes. Equipment that reads DIP switch settings only during startup can apply a different input-handling arrangement from a system monitoring them continuously.
Operating temperature specifications vary between the new families. Same Sky’s detailed product listings give the DS06-127-SMT an operating range of −20°C to +85°C, while the DS07-254 and DS08-254-SMT series are rated from −40°C to +85°C. Those differences must be considered for equipment installed in colder industrial or outdoor environments.
The manufacturer’s catalogue also identifies the switches as having no ingress protection rating. Their exposure to moisture, contaminants, and cleaning processes therefore needs to be managed through the surrounding assembly and enclosure design. The environmental suitability of a completed product cannot be established from its electrical switching specification alone.
Industrial controllers, telecommunications equipment, and IoT devices are among the applications identified for the new components. In these products, manual configuration can remain useful where settings must be established during installation or servicing and retained independently of the application software. The number of available positions determines the combinations that can be represented by the selected package.
The DS06-127-SMT, DS07-254, and DS08-254-SMT families are available for ordering, with individual availability ranging from stock to eight-week lead times. Distribution prices start at $1.19 per unit in quantities of 100, while original equipment manufacturers can obtain separate volume pricing.
The additions extend Same Sky’s DIP switch portfolio with three distinct mechanical configurations. Their published dimensions, mounting arrangements, contact ratings, and temperature limits provide the basis for selecting a component that matches the electrical and assembly constraints of the intended electronic product.
