HARTING has widened availability of its ix Industrial PushTrigger IP20 connector family through Mouser, adding a push-pull locking option for industrial Ethernet links operating at data rates up to 10Gbit/s. The range supports Type A, B, and C coding and mates with existing ix Industrial female connectors.
PushTrigger uses insulation-displacement contact termination, allowing cable conductors to be connected without soldering, and a vibration-resistant push-pull mechanism to retain the plug. HARTING specifies Cat 6A Class EA transmission to 500MHz, giving the connector bandwidth for 10Gbit/s Ethernet in automation, robotics, control, smart-infrastructure, and transportation equipment.
The physical format is up to 75% smaller than a conventional RJ45 connector. That reduction can release useful panel and PCB area in compact controllers, robots, machine modules, and distributed I/O, where connector dimensions often set the minimum size of an enclosure edge long after processors and other active components have become smaller.
Reducing connector volume cannot come at the expense of the transmission channel. Faster differential links have tighter limits around impedance discontinuities, insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, and shielding, particularly when cables run close to drives, motors, switching power supplies, and other electrically noisy industrial equipment.
The PushTrigger range is fully shielded against electromagnetic interference and specified for operation from -40°C to +85°C. Mouser also lists vibration performance to IEC 61373 Category 1, Class B, along with IP20 protection, placing the connector inside equipment or controlled enclosures rather than in locations requiring a sealed field interface.
The environmental boundary is important. A compact Ethernet connector can be mechanically robust while still being unsuitable for direct exposure to water or contamination, so the interface has to be selected as part of the equipment enclosure rather than treated as an interchangeable miniature substitute for every industrial RJ45 or sealed connector.
Termination method also affects production and maintenance. IDC assembly removes a soldering process from cable preparation and can reduce tooling and operator steps, while a push-pull latch avoids the time associated with threaded coupling. Those advantages become more valuable in equipment with several densely packed network interfaces or where cable replacement has to be performed in situ.
The electrical channel still depends on the complete cable assembly. Connector performance, cable category, conductor geometry, shielding continuity, termination quality, bend radius, and routing all contribute to whether a nominally 10Gbit/s link maintains adequate signal margin once installed in a machine.
HARTING’s compatibility with existing ix Industrial female connectors lowers the engineering overhead for equipment already using the interface. A PushTrigger cable-side connector can be introduced without replacing the receptacle, although the resulting assembly still needs to be checked for enclosure clearance, strain relief, cable routing, EMC performance, and the intended vibration environment.
That compatibility also helps where product families span factory-built equipment and field-service variants. Manufacturers can retain a common equipment-side interface while changing the cable termination or locking arrangement according to assembly and maintenance requirements.
Mouser is stocking the connectors now, making the product available for design-in rather than leaving availability tied to a future production date. Component availability is a routine part of engineering, but it becomes particularly visible with connectors: a board cannot progress cleanly from prototype to production if the specified cable system is difficult to assemble or procure in repeatable volume.
As industrial controllers combine more cameras, sensors, computing, and networked functions, interface density continues to rise. HARTING’s PushTrigger gives designers a smaller 10Gbit/s copper option while retaining shielding and mechanical locking, but the IP20 boundary and the quality of the complete cable channel remain part of the design calculation.
