Legrand opens electronics manufacturing facility in Cramlington

Legrand UK & Ireland has opened a 43,000 sq ft electronics manufacturing facility in Cramlington, supporting CP Electronics lighting controls and Legrand Care production.

IN Brief:

  • Legrand UK & Ireland has opened a 43,000 sq ft electronics manufacturing facility in Cramlington.
  • The site will support CP Electronics lighting controls and Legrand Care production.
  • Gas-free operation, solar PV, digital metering, and efficient heating support lower-carbon manufacturing.

Legrand UK & Ireland has opened a 43,000 sq ft electronics manufacturing facility at Nelson Park in Cramlington, Northumberland, creating a new European centre of excellence for the group.

The purpose-built site will support Legrand’s CP Electronics lighting controls business and Legrand Care, extending the company’s UK manufacturing footprint and placing production close to the North East’s clean energy sector and skilled industrial workforce.

The facility has been designed around lower-carbon operation. It is fully gas-free, with a high-efficiency air-source heat pump system providing heating and cooling across the site. A rooftop solar photovoltaic array with an installed capacity of 163kWp is expected to generate close to 128,000kWh each year, reducing reliance on grid electricity.

Additional infrastructure includes electric vehicle charging, sustainable drainage, permeable paving, and high-performance insulation. Legrand has also installed its own systems across the building, including Linea 5000 door entry panels, cable management solutions, and digital energy metering technology.

The site therefore functions as both a production facility and a working demonstration of connected building technologies. Digital metering and building-level energy visibility are becoming increasingly important in electronics manufacturing, where equipment uptime, power demand, and environmental targets have to be managed together.

The opening is particularly relevant to lighting controls and assisted-living electronics. CP Electronics operates in a building controls market shaped by energy performance, occupancy data, and automated control, while Legrand Care serves environments where reliability, communications, and service continuity are critical.

Lighting electronics are becoming more integrated and digitally controlled, as shown by Melexis’ LIN RGB lighting controller with integrated DC/DC power. Legrand’s investment addresses the manufacturing side of that transition, where connected lighting and building-control products require efficient production, traceability, and stable supply.

The Cramlington facility also reflects a wider shift in UK electronics manufacturing. Companies serving industrial, building, medical, and infrastructure markets are under pressure to improve resilience while reducing operational emissions. Facilities that combine production capacity with energy monitoring, flexible services, and access to regional skills are becoming more valuable.

The building itself forms part of the production system. Energy use, internal logistics, environmental performance, and data visibility all affect cost and compliance. A gas-free facility with on-site generation and digital metering gives Legrand a stronger platform for managing those pressures as customers ask more detailed questions about product and supply-chain emissions.

With CP Electronics and Legrand Care operating from the new site, Cramlington becomes a more significant node in Legrand’s UK operations. The investment adds capacity while linking electronics production, building technology, and lower-carbon manufacturing within a single facility.
