MEMPHIS adds Puya memory products to linecard

MEMPHIS is adding Puya non-volatile memory products to distribution worldwide. The agreement expands sourcing options across NOR Flash and EEPROM devices.

IN Brief:

  • Puya’s NOR Flash and EEPROM families are joining MEMPHIS Electronic’s global distribution portfolio.
  • The range covers multiple densities, voltage options, temperature grades, and package configurations for embedded applications.
  • MEMPHIS is adding Puya to a memory-focused linecard covering more than 18 manufacturers.

MEMPHIS Electronic has signed a distribution agreement with Puya Semiconductor covering NOR Flash and EEPROM products, adding another non-volatile memory supplier to its global component linecard.

The agreement gives MEMPHIS customers access to Puya memory products across multiple densities, supply-voltage options, temperature grades and package configurations. Puya targets applications including industrial equipment, automotive electronics, IoT systems, wearables, computing and other embedded designs.

Puya was founded in Shanghai in 2016 and supplies non-volatile memory alongside microcontrollers and analogue products. Its NOR Flash and EEPROM ranges address two mature memory functions that remain common in embedded systems despite the rapid development of higher-density storage technologies.

Serial NOR Flash is widely used to hold firmware and boot code because established processor and microcontroller interfaces can access it directly. EEPROM addresses smaller data sets that must survive power loss and may be rewritten repeatedly during a product’s operating life, including calibration values, configuration settings and serialisation data.

The functions are familiar, but substitution is not automatic. Two devices with the same nominal capacity may differ in command sets, operating voltage, erase behaviour, package pinout, temperature rating, endurance, qualification and timing. Firmware can also depend on particular status registers or protection schemes.

That creates a continuing role for distributor-led design support, particularly in industrial products where the electronics platform may remain in manufacture for many years. Engineers selecting an alternative memory device have to consider whether the replacement can be qualified without changes to the PCB, software or production test process.

MEMPHIS specialises in memory products rather than operating as a general broadline component distributor. The company says its portfolio covers more than 18 memory manufacturers, with services spanning design-in support, samples, product selection, inventory management and multiple-source planning.

The Puya agreement broadens that supplier base in two established memory categories. MEMPHIS can now position devices from the Chinese manufacturer alongside other NOR and EEPROM products when customers require a different density, temperature grade, package or supply route.

Marco Mezger, Global President of MEMPHIS Electronic, said: “NOR and EEPROM are still vital memory technologies for many products.” The commercial logic rests on adding further sourcing options rather than introducing a new memory architecture.

Supply continuity remains particularly important for embedded electronics built around mature memory types. A processor, industrial controller or sensor platform can stay in production long after the highest-volume consumer market has shifted to newer processes, leaving OEMs exposed when older components are consolidated or discontinued.

Automotive and industrial designs add qualification requirements that can make last-minute substitution difficult. A change in temperature grade, package construction or endurance specification may trigger validation work even when the new memory is electrically similar to the previous component.

MEMPHIS has built part of its business around second and third sourcing for that reason. Its current operation includes 17 offices and three global warehouses, extending the agreement beyond European distribution into North America and Asia-Pacific markets.

The Puya addition therefore increases the number of devices available within an existing memory sourcing model. It does not alter the underlying NOR or EEPROM technologies, and the announcement does not introduce a new fabrication process or interface standard.

Availability, qualification and lifecycle support will determine whether the new linecard relationship converts into long-term design wins. Puya gains access to an established specialist distribution network, while MEMPHIS adds another source for memory technologies that remain embedded in large numbers of industrial and automotive systems.
