XIVER secures €28m for semiconductor expansion

XIVER has secured financing for a major Dutch capacity expansion. The €55 million programme includes an ASML DUV lithography system and manufacturing upgrades.

IN Brief:

  • ABN AMRO is providing €28 million of senior debt within XIVER’s €55 million Eindhoven investment programme.
  • Planned equipment upgrades include an ASML DUV lithography system alongside expansion of specialist semiconductor and microsystems production.
  • XIVER manufactures photonic chips, infrared technologies, medical imaging devices, and advanced thin-film products in Eindhoven.

XIVER has secured €28 million in senior debt financing from ABN AMRO as part of a €55 million programme to expand semiconductor and microsystems manufacturing at its Eindhoven operation.

The investment will increase production capacity and upgrade the company’s equipment base, including the acquisition of an ASML deep-ultraviolet lithography system. XIVER develops and manufactures integrated photonic chips, infrared technologies, medical imaging devices and advanced thin-film products at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

The company was carved out of Philips and acquired by Dutch investors in early 2025. Its manufacturing operation is focused on specialist semiconductor processes rather than leading-edge logic, spanning photonics, MEMS, transducers, thin films and other products that require combinations of materials, wafer processing and packaging capability.

XIVER operates 200mm manufacturing and has previously detailed capability across dry and wet etching, PECVD, PVD, LPCVD, atomic layer deposition, sputtering, evaporation, wafer bonding, chemical-mechanical polishing, lithography, metrology and electrical probing. The new programme adds to that base rather than establishing a greenfield fab.

The ASML DUV system is one of the most visible elements of the expansion. XIVER already operates lithography equipment for specialist device production, while a DUV tool broadens the process capability available for structures that require tighter pattern control than older optical lithography can provide.

The company’s product mix gives the investment a different character from a large CMOS capacity announcement. Integrated photonics, infrared structures, medical imaging transducers and specialised thin films can remain on mature wafer diameters while still requiring complex process integration and highly controlled manufacturing.

Photonic integrated circuits combine optical functions on semiconductor substrates and can require etch profiles, films and dimensional control that differ from conventional electronic devices. MEMS and medical imaging products introduce other requirements around mechanical structures, membranes, bonding and materials compatibility. A mixed specialist fab therefore has to support several process families without allowing one to contaminate or constrain another.

The financing will also support capacity expansion as XIVER develops its contract manufacturing role. The company works with customers from development and industrialisation into production, making equipment availability and process transfer part of its commercial model rather than simply selling finished standard components.

Wil van de Wiel, CEO of XIVER, said the financing would allow the company to “substantially scale our production capacity” for its international customer base. ABN AMRO is supplying slightly more than half of the announced programme value through senior debt, with the remainder funded through the wider investment structure.

The expansion arrives as European semiconductor policy increasingly covers more than advanced-node logic fabs. Photonics, sensors, MEMS, analogue devices and semiconductor equipment all depend on specialist manufacturing capacity that can be difficult to replace when a process is qualified around particular materials or tools.

XIVER’s existing application areas also cross several markets. Its technologies are used in data communications, semiconductor equipment, medical imaging and infrared systems, giving the fab exposure to customers whose production requirements differ substantially in volume, qualification and lifecycle.

The company has not disclosed the additional annual wafer capacity created by the €55 million programme, the installation date for the DUV system or the customers expected to use the new capacity. Those figures will become more useful once equipment installation and process qualification begin.

The immediate development is nevertheless concrete: €28 million of bank financing is now in place for a €55 million equipment and capacity programme. XIVER is adding lithography and wider manufacturing capability to an established Eindhoven specialist fab rather than proposing capacity that still depends on future funding.
