IN Brief:
- Bluebird Fiber will deploy Ekinops coherent DWDM equipment to support 100G to 400G wavelength services.
- The operator’s network spans more than 36,000 route miles, 450 points of presence and 12 US states.
- The agreement expands an existing relationship and also covers Ekinops enterprise networking equipment.
Ekinops has signed a multi-year agreement to expand Bluebird Fiber’s optical backbone with coherent DWDM equipment capable of supporting 100G to 400G wavelength services across the US Midwest.
Bluebird operates more than 36,000 route miles of fibre across 12 states, with more than 450 points of presence and over 750,000 buildings either on the network or close enough to connect. The programme will increase core capacity and wavelength availability as the operator adds traffic from data centres, hyperscale infrastructure, carriers and business customers.
Dense wavelength division multiplexing allows multiple optical channels to travel over the same fibre pair, with each wavelength carrying an independent data stream. Coherent transmission adds digital signal processing and phase-sensitive detection, allowing the system to recover higher-rate signals after they have accumulated dispersion and other impairments across longer fibre routes.
Moving individual services from 100G towards 400G places tighter demands on modulation, signal quality and optical spectrum management without changing the underlying fibre. Bluebird also has to accommodate a mixture of channel speeds as older services remain operational, so the transport platform must support progressive upgrades rather than requiring a single network-wide cutover.
The contract extends an existing relationship between the companies and will be implemented in phases. Bluebird will use Ekinops optical networking equipment for the backbone expansion while also deploying enterprise networking products elsewhere in its infrastructure.
Bluebird’s network grew substantially after its acquisition of most of Everstream’s assets earlier in 2026, combining two Midwest fibre footprints and increasing the number of routes and interconnection points under its control. More physical reach creates additional opportunities for wavelength and data centre services, but it also increases the amount of backbone capacity that has to be planned across the network.
Coherent DWDM allows capacity to increase on suitable routes without requiring another physical fibre build for every rise in traffic. Where optical loss, dispersion and span design remain within the transponder limits, the operator can add wavelengths or move individual services to higher-rate coherent modules over the installed fibre.
The achievable capacity still depends on the condition and length of the fibre, amplifier configuration and the optical spectrum already occupied. A 400G wavelength cannot simply be inserted anywhere on the network without checking whether the complete optical path can sustain the required signal quality.
Higher-rate coherent transmission also carries its own electrical and thermal demands. Digital signal processors consume power, transponders generate heat and denser optical loading increases the need to control gain and signal levels across the line system. The headline data rate therefore has to be supported by the surrounding transport platform rather than treated as an isolated pluggable-module specification.
Ekinops develops its Ekinops360 optical transport range for metropolitan, regional and long-distance links as well as data centre interconnection. The company has adopted pluggable coherent optics where the required performance can be delivered within smaller modules, while retaining dedicated transport hardware where reach, power or line-system integration demands it.
Bluebird will use the upgraded infrastructure for dedicated wavelength services as well as backbone capacity. Such links can provide predictable high-bandwidth connections between data centres and other facilities where replication traffic, storage transfers and distributed compute workloads need to move without sharing the same packet service used by general enterprise traffic.
The agreement has been presented partly against rising AI infrastructure demand in the Midwest, although the immediate engineering work is an optical transport upgrade. Ekinops is supplying the line and coherent transmission capability needed to move more traffic across Bluebird’s existing fibre estate, with 400G representing the upper service rate identified for the current programme rather than a replacement for every lower-rate wavelength already running.
Phased deployment allows Bluebird to add capacity where demand appears while keeping the broader network in service. Increasing the utilisation of 36,000 route miles through coherent wavelength technology offers a faster route to additional backbone capacity than extending the physical network every time traffic grows.
