TAIYO YUDEN integrates component data into OrCAD X

TAIYO YUDEN adds extensive component data within Cadence OrCAD X. The integration makes characteristics for approximately 10,000 capacitors and inductors available within an established PCB design environment, supporting component selection and circuit simulation.

IN Brief:

  • TAIYO YUDEN has made characteristic data for approximately 10,000 electronic components available as standard content in Cadence OrCAD X.
  • The supported product groups include multilayer ceramic capacitors, inductors, chip bead inductors and conductive polymer hybrid aluminium electrolytic capacitors.
  • The integration is intended to simplify component evaluation and circuit simulation, but no measured reduction in development time has been disclosed.

TAIYO YUDEN has made characteristic data for approximately 10,000 electronic components available as standard content in Cadence OrCAD X, adding manufacturer information to the PCB design and simulation environment. The integration covers multilayer ceramic capacitors, inductors, chip bead inductors and conductive polymer hybrid aluminium electrolytic capacitors, allowing engineers to access relevant component characteristics while developing electronic circuits.

Announced on 20 October, the arrangement expands the information available within an established electronic design automation platform. Rather than introducing a new simulation tool, TAIYO YUDEN is supplying data associated with its existing component portfolio for use during selection, circuit evaluation and design refinement.

Component selection involves more than matching nominal values against a circuit specification. Passive devices exhibit electrical characteristics that depend on their construction and operating conditions, while the behaviour of the surrounding circuit can change significantly when those properties differ from the assumptions used during initial design.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors illustrate this problem. Their effective capacitance may vary with applied DC voltage, temperature and the dielectric material used. Two components with the same nominal capacitance can therefore behave differently when installed in the same circuit, particularly where the voltage across them is substantial relative to their rating.

That variation can affect filtering, decoupling and power conversion. A capacitor selected from a catalogue by its nominal value may provide less effective capacitance than anticipated under the intended operating conditions, altering the response of a filter or the behaviour of a supply during changes in electrical load.

Frequency introduces another consideration. Real capacitors contain resistance and inductance in addition to their intended capacitive behaviour. These parasitic characteristics influence impedance, particularly at higher frequencies, and determine the range over which a device provides the expected response.

Inductors have related limitations. Their effective inductance, winding resistance and losses can vary with current, temperature and operating frequency. Magnetic materials may approach saturation as current rises, changing the component’s electrical characteristics and potentially affecting the behaviour of a converter or filter.

In switching power supplies, an inductor’s properties contribute to current ripple, energy storage and dissipation. Selecting an unsuitable component may alter the regulator’s operating margins even when the nominal inductance appears correct. Accurate characteristics are therefore important when comparing candidate devices under realistic electrical conditions.

Chip bead inductors are commonly used to attenuate unwanted high-frequency currents. Their impedance changes with frequency and can be affected by the current flowing through them. A nominal impedance figure measured at one frequency does not describe the complete attenuation behaviour of a finished circuit.

Noise suppression also depends on where the component is installed and how it interacts with the surrounding conductors and devices. PCB trace geometry, return-current paths and connections can introduce parasitic effects that change measured electromagnetic performance. Component data helps establish part of the electrical model, but it cannot replace analysis of the complete assembly.

Conductive polymer hybrid aluminium electrolytic capacitors form another part of the integrated dataset. These devices combine characteristics associated with polymer and liquid electrolyte technologies, with applications involving power supply filtering and other circuits requiring particular capacitance and impedance properties.

Their equivalent series resistance, frequency response, ripple current capability and temperature behaviour can influence the amount of heating and voltage variation produced during operation. Engineers need to evaluate those properties against the actual demands of the selected application rather than treating components with similar headline ratings as interchangeable.

Making manufacturer characteristic information available within OrCAD X can reduce the separation between circuit design and component evaluation. A designer can examine suitable parts alongside the circuit being developed, using the available information to investigate how different choices may affect the intended electrical behaviour.

The practical value depends on which characteristics are supplied for each component and how the design software uses them. Frequency-dependent impedance data, voltage characteristics and temperature behaviour support different forms of assessment, while a full simulation model requires the information and format appropriate to the relevant analysis.

The presence of a part number in the integrated content should not be taken to mean that every device has a complete model covering all possible operating conditions. TAIYO YUDEN has confirmed the approximate number of supported components and their principal product groups, but has not published a common list of identical model capabilities for every item.

OrCAD X provides an environment for schematic capture, circuit simulation and PCB design. The additional component information can support decisions made during those stages, particularly where engineers must compare several potential components before committing to a circuit configuration.

Design iteration remains necessary because component behaviour is only one part of overall equipment performance. A circuit may satisfy a schematic simulation while displaying different characteristics after PCB assembly because of layout parasitics, thermal conditions or other effects that were not represented fully in the original model.

Physical validation is also necessary when electrical requirements are especially demanding. Measurements on the assembled board can reveal behaviour associated with component placement, coupling between circuits and the operating environment, all of which must be considered alongside the manufacturer’s data.

TAIYO YUDEN says the integration is intended to help shorten engineering development cycles and support more efficient design evaluation. It has not disclosed a controlled comparison quantifying time saved, improved simulation accuracy or reductions in physical prototype iterations.

The company intends to expand the information available through the Cadence platform. The current addition establishes access to a substantial manufacturer dataset within a commonly used PCB development environment, with the engineering benefit determined by the quality, completeness and application of the characteristics supplied for each selected component.
